Kongunad style vazhakai poriyal or plantain stir fry

vazhakai poriyal or plantain stir fry is a very simple and healthy recipe from the kongunad cuisine. Vazhakai poriyal is an easy to make even on a busy day.Instead of always preparing a fry or a roast, you can try this simple and tasty recipe for a change. Cooked and chopped raw banana mixed with coconut,ginger, garlic and chilly mixture and tempered with mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal, this poriyal gets an ultimate flavor. You can also use coconut oil for nice flavor and taste. As this recipe does not require much oil its healthy too. It also tastes very delicious as a side dish for sambar sadham and rasam.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 Raw plantain

  • 2 tsp coconuts
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • 1 green chilly
  • curry leaves
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 10 shallots
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp chana dal
  • 2 red chilly
  • Salt as required
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

Instructions
 

  • Peel the skin of raw plantain and cut into halves add it to water along with 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and cook well. check in between and switch off once done. Once its cooled down completely peel the outer layer again. chop the banana into cubes and keep aside.
  • For making a masala mix add 2 tsp coconut to mixie jar along with 1 tsp ginger and 3-4 garlic cloves, 1 green chilly, 1 sprig curry leaves and 1/2 tsp cumin seeds. Grind to coarse mixture and keep aside.
  • In a pan add 2 tsp oil add 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp urad dal and 1/4 tsp chana dal. Add 2 red chilly, few curry leaves and add chopped shallots and mix well.
  • Add the prepared masala mixture and saute for a while add 1/2 tsp salt or as required and mix well.
  • In 2 mins add the cooked and chopped raw banana and mix well till bind well with the masalas. In kongunadu style people add lots of coconuts in the dishes and it tastes absolutely delicious.
