Karaikudi style mutton pepper kulambu is a very delicious side dish thats goes well with all the tiffin items like idly, dosa, chapathi and it also suits white rice. You can make this type of mutton kulambu when you have cold and cough. As the pepper added in this dish gives you a relief from cold and cough. As we know, pepper has medicinal use in it. It is used as a home remedy for common cold and throat infection. This kulambu is made with freshly grounded masalas which gives nice taste and flavor.

Ingredients
  

For making kulambu masala

  • 2 tsp oil
  • 2 tsp pepper corns
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds
  • 150 g shallots
  • 2 tsp grated coconuts
  • fresh curry leaves

For making mutton milagu kulambu

  • Mutton 1/2 kg
  • 3 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 green chilly
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
  • 3 medium sized tomato paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • water as required
  • chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions
 

For making mutton kuzhambu masala

  • In a pan or kadai add 2 tsp oil add all the ingrdients given under for making masala one by one and fry in oil till nice aroma comes.
  • Adding shallots to this curry gives nice taste. Adding coriander seeds gives nic aroma and thickness to the curry. Add grated coconuts at the last and give a quick mix and switch off.
  • Once the mixture is cooled down grind to a fine paste.
  • if you don't have ginger garlic paste handy add 4-5 garlic cloves and 1/2 inch ginger along with the masala.

For making mutton pepper curry in karaikudi style

  • In a pressure cooker add 3 tsp sesame oil. sesame oil gives nice taste to non veg dishes.
  • Add 2 green chilly and 1 tsp ginger garlic paste and mix well. Add the ground masala paste and stir.
  • Meanwhile prepare paste of 2 medium sized tomato and add it to the cooker
  • Add fresh curry leaves and add cleaned mutton and mix well.
  • Add required salt and water to the curry. Add 1 tsp full of garam masala powder and mix well.
  • add 1 tsp ghee and mix well check for salt and spiceness. Add more pepper powder if needed.
  • Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 4-5 whistles.
  • Open and check whether mutton is cooked. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with idly, dosa, chapathi or rice.
