Maha Shivaratri will be celebrated on Tuesday, 1 March this year. Falling in the Indian month of Phalgun, Maha Shivratri is one of the most grandly celebrated days. This year the auspicious occasion’s festivities will begin at 3:16 am on March 1 and will end at 1:00 am on March 2.Shivaratri is one of the most significant Hindu festivals that celebrate the convergence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. Maha Shivaratri is observed by remembering Lord Shiva and chanting mantras, prayers, and fasting. Devotees of Lord Shiva keep awake all night chanting mantras and prayers. There is a Shivaratri in every luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar known as Masik Shivaratri. However, Maha Shivaratri is celebrated only once a year in late winter (February/March) before the arrival of Summer. Maha Shivaratri literally means “the Great Night of Shiva”. It’s said that Maha Shivaratri is the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction. Maha Shivaratri celebrations include – jaagaran all-night vigil and prayers; Offerings fruits, leaves, sweets and milk to Lord Shiva; fasting with Vedic worship of Lord Shiva etc. Devotees recite “Om Namah Shivaya” mantra to praise Lord Shiva. Why do we celebrate Maha Shivratri? The festival celebrates the grand marriage of the lord of destruction, Shiva — with the goddess of fertility, love, and beauty — Parvati, who is also known as Shakti (power). Special prayers are offered in all Shiva temples throughout the holy night.

Unlike a lot of other Hindi festivals, Maha Shivratri is a more solemn festival as it is marked with internal reflection and introspection. Devotees spend the day in prayer, meditation and observing strict full-day fasts. Some celebrate in the morning while others organise ‘jagrans’ at night.

Every year, Mahashivratri is celebrated as the convergence of the forces of Shiva and Shakti.

As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that on Mahashivaratri, Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati got married. On the special occasion of Mahashivaratri, devotees keep fast to impress Lord Shiva. Girls keep the fast and perform Puja following all the rituals to get the desired groom just like Mata Parvati got.

Sarveshwara Dhyana Nilayam Temple Thamaraipakkam – Worlds tallest shiva lingam temple #mahashivratri

Sarveshwara Dhyana Nilayam temple, situated at Tamaraipakkam, has a massive Shiva Lingam, which stands 90 ft from ground level. In fact it is one of the tallest Shiva Lingams in the world and is very unique. Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda meticulously planned and gave the blueprints of the unique model of Dhyana Nilayam with a huge 65 ft high Shivalinga-shaped dome, a spacious sprawling circular Satsang hall on the ground floor and the Dhyana Nilayam on the top-floor that was designed by M/s Vybogam Architects. Inside the temple is a rare Sphatika Lingam an ‘endless’ form in crystal, encrusted with a diamond studded crest, mounted on a special glass case. There is also a granite Lingam beside it. The consecration of both, the Sphatika Lingam and the granite Lingam were done on 15th October by Pujya Gurudev. Holy water from the eight holy rivers of our land was poured by Gurudev from a silver Shankha over the Sphatika Lingam. Abhishekam of the Sphatika Lingam is done annually on Mahashivarathri day, while daily puja including Abhishekam is performed on the small granite Lingam. The 65 ft high dome of the Lingam shaped hall reverberates resonantly as the mantras and shlokas are chanted. This is indeed an unforgettable experience for many devotees. Lord Sarveshwara is believed to take the avatar of Dhanavantri every Sunday. Hence, a free medical clinic is held every Sunday for the villagers of the neighbourhood.

Chidambaram Natarajar Temple VLOG | Chidambaram Ragasiyam
