Spicy Amini kozhukattai | Kara ammini kozhukattai

Ammini kozhukattai also known as mini kozhukattai or Mani kozhukattai south Indian neivedyam to lord Ganesha.

Ammini kozhukattai usually we prepare this during Vinayagar chaturthi to offer lord Ganesha. This kozhukattai is small and round shaped so it is named as Amini kozhukattai. It tastes delicious as I used home made rice flour to make this kozhukattai. This spicy version of kozhukattai is has the taste of chilly powder with coconut which tastes really different. As on Ganesh chaturthi we have lots of sweets this spicy kozhukattai I will do without fail for a change from sweet.

We also prepare sweet version of ammini kozhukattai during Ganesh chaturthi. Kozhukattai also known as modak in hindi is a famous prasadham offered to God Ganesha during this auspicious day.

Spicy Amini kozhukattai
  1. Take one cup raw rice flour
  2. Sieve rice flour finely
  3. In a kadai boil 1 glass water
  4. Add 1/3 tsp salt to water
  5. Add 1 tsp sesame oil to the boiling water
  6. Once the water comes to rolling boil
  7. Add sieved rice flour and mix well
  8. Once it is warm enough to touch knead by hands
  9. Make small balls out of the dough and place in greased idly plate
  10. Keep the idly plate in cooker with water underneath and cook for 5-7 mins
  11. Close lid and cook. Don't forget to pre boil the water under idly cooker.
  12. Give a rest for 5 mins and open.
  13. See the balls are soft when touch
  14. And bounces back to shape. If you over cook it becomes chewy or hard.
  15. In a pan add 1 tsp sesame oil
  16. Add 1/3 tsp mustard seeds
  17. Add 1 tsp urad dal
  18. Fry till golden brown
  19. Add few curry leaves
  20. Add cooked kozhukattai to the pan
  21. Sprinkle a pinch asafoetida or perungayam
  22. Add 1/3 tsp chilly powder
  23. Add little salt as we added salt in dough adjust accordingly
  24. Add grated coconuts
  25. Mix well for 2 mins
  26. Kara ammini kozhukattai is ready to serve lord Ganesha.
Recipe Notes

Important instructions to follow

  1. Fresh home made rice flour gives nice taste to kozhukattai
  2. Do not forget to add salt in rice flour otherwise kozhukattai will not have any taste
  3. Adding oil gives softness
  4. Knead dough with hot water also makes kozhukattai soft
  5. Adding coconut is optional but gives nice taste
  6. You can also add idly podi instead of chilly powder
